Zanie is the absolute BEST! I had very few eyebrows and it was overplucked in a round shape. People used to laugh at my eyebrows and asked me what went wrong. But Zanie changed my life. Now people admire my face and ask me where I did my permanent makeup because they are obsessed. Thank you Zanie. I feel great about myself and the fact that I don't need to wear any makeup now is making my life so much easier.

FAQ

You Ask, We Answer

What is permanent make up?

Micropigmentation or permanent make-up (PMU) is a revolutionary method whereby pigments are deposited into the upper dermal layer of the skin using an ultra-fine needle to create various styles and shapes that enhances the eyebrows, eyes or lips naturally.

Permanent make-up allows you to subtly give your individual features shape and definition to magnify and place emphasis on your natural beauty. Permanent makeup is aimed at naturally enhancing the persons features and is not therefore always recommended to replace makeup necessarily however each individuals needs are considered and discussed between client and artist.

Is there a difference between permanent make up and tattooing?

Although there are similarities that can be concluded one of them being that in both arts a technician works within the skin, many differences start with the various specifically formulated permanent makeup pigments that go through rigorous testing. Numerous tests are done to fall under the strict regulations set by the EU.

The skin on the face is extremely complex acting differently from the skin on the body making it a far more complicated procedure. Delicate techniques and expert knowledge are necessary to perform these advanced procedures that often take years to master.

It should then be noted that the field of permanent makeup is highly specialized with its industry-exclusive equipment specially manufactured for the use of facial cosmetic tattooing.

These two art forms should not be confused with one another as they both should be honored with the same respect however the goal of applying permanent makeup is to have the appearance of naturally applied professional makeup that will last day and night under any occasion and not a cat tattooed on your face.

The object of permanent makeup is to have your facial features enhanced and for your newly acquired result to look as naturally gorgeous as possible. The trick is to leave people wondering why you look so good!

How permanent is permanent?

The initial treatment accompanied by the 3-6 month touch up which completes the procedure allows for the result to last anything from 1-3 years. Unfortunately, our bodies' natural immune response does affect the longevity of the pigment in the skin since it breaks down any foreign particle ie pigment within the body. Not only is the immune response a factor but the different systems within our body that regulate hormones.

For instance, estrogen plays a role in the structure and texture of the skin whereas androgen hormones create more sebum. Different chemical interactions within medications can cause pigments to fade faster.

Topical treatments such as retinoids can therefore also create pigment metabolizing faster. Environmental factors such as pollution and free radicals, Sun exposure, laser treatments, and chemical peels: AHA, glycolic. The list is endless.

Generally, it can be expected with all the above taken into regard that it lasts between 1-2 years before an annual touch-up is required. Normally recommended at around 1.5 years.

Technology is always improving in the industry and with pigment particle density becoming more researched and tested organic pigments tend to last far longer within the skin. However, with this comes a more permanent commitment, and the beautiful translucency of inorganic pigments are lost.

The artist and patient will discuss on the day which technique and pigment will be individually better suited as factors such as skin type and hair type are considered.

How long does it take to heal?

For eyebrows, it generally takes between 7-10 days to heal and scab, sometimes depending on overall health 14 days. During this time aftercare instructions will need to be followed religiously. Eyeliner takes between 5-7 days and lips between 4- 6 days. All cosmetic procedures take between 30-60 days for true colour to show which means even after the scabs have come off your skin is still going through a healing process.

Will I be able to swim, exercise or shower?

For the first 10-14 days these activities need to be avoided at all costs. Any direct contact with water will affect the healed result and pigment will be lost. Aftercare is far more important to ensure the best results possible. If you are planning on going on a vacation to the beach, the procedure must be done at least 4- 6 weeks before. If you can take a shower without the water running over the treated area, then by all means. We recommend bathing until the area is healed. It is only to avoid direct contact with water as this will influence the healed result.

How do I maintain my permanent makeup?

After the initial procedure, you will need a 3-6 month touch-up to complete the first procedure. Annual/yearly touch-ups are scheduled according to how your body metabolizes the pigment. Generally, it is recommended that a touch-up is done every 1-3 years to maintain the colour. Tinting and shaping are recommended in between these time frames to keep the area neat and maintained.

Eyebrows Aftercare
  • NO water, cleansers, creams, makeup, or any products on the treated area for 10 days.
  • For the first 24 hours only, directly after the procedure clean the area with sterile water and a cotton pad every hour until you go to sleep which means every 60 mins unless directed differently. Continue to do so the next day if and when fluid occurs. The area can be cleaned several times depending on fluid build-up.
  • If there is no fluid build-up the following day you can cease cleaning the area.
  • The eyebrow area must be kept completely dry of ointment for the first 24 hours or as specified after which you would start applying ointment only when necessary. If the area feels as though it is pulling together and dry then ointment may be applied, do not over-apply as the area needs to be allowed to breathe. A good rule of thumb would be to start putting on ointment when scabbing or tightness occurs.
  • For the next three days blot the area lightly if fluid occurs. The area may not be wiped again with sterile water after the first 48 hours as this will affect the pigment.
  • DO NOT rub, pick or scratch the treated area. Let any scabbing or dry skin naturally exfoliate off. Around this stage discontinue the use of any ointment, meaning allow the area to be dry during the exfoliation(scabbing) process. Picking can cause scarring. Do not peel or pick at scabs, this could cause pigment loss, scarring, and delayed healing.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning for 3-4 weeks after the procedure. Avoid heavy sweating for the first 10 days. Do not apply topical cosmetics over the area while healing. Avoid sleeping directly on the treated area for the first 10 days.
  • NO facials, Botox, chemical treatments, and microdermabrasion for 4 weeks. Apply ointment 1-2 times per day.
  • Note that the end result of your eyebrow enhancement will take a full 28 days to reappear after scabbing has come off. This is normal as pigment works in layers within your skin structure.
  • Please note: Eyebrows will appear darker and bolder due to natural scabbing and healing for the first 10 days. This is very common for all permanent cosmetic procedures.

Eyeliner Aftercare
  • Do not wear contact lenses during the procedure or for 24 hours after the initial procedure.
  • Have sunglasses available. Eyes may be light sensitive or even dilated immediately after.
  • The sunglasses are also handy for hiding puffy eyes.
  • Eyes will be swollen for a few days, drinking celestamine will considerably reduce swelling.
  • Eyes may feel dry or irritated. Lubricating refresher drops may be used.
  • Do not use mascara/eyeshadow until outer healing is completed (5-7 Days)
  • Apply ointment only when necessary, with a sterile q-tip. Avoid touching the area with your fingers.
  • Always ensure hands are washed and sanitised when treating the area.
  • Allow the area to naturally exfoliate. Within 5-7 days line will be finer and lighter by up to 50%.
  • If any irritation persists after three days consult medical attention.
Lip Aftercare
  • NO water, cleansers, creams, makeup, or any other products on the treated area for 10 days.
  • Avoid direct contact with toothpaste and mouthwash as it contains bleaching agents.
  • Lips will be swollen for a few days. Anti-inflammatories may be taken to reduce this.
  • Eat carefully and drink through a straw for the first 24 hours. Avoid eating foods that need the use of your lips.
  • Do not apply topical cosmetics over the area while healing.
  • Clean the area with sterile water and a cotton pad every 90 minutes on the day of the procedure.
  • Do not wipe the area from the second day onwards.
  • For the next three days blot the area lightly if fluid occurs.
  • Continue antiviral treatment for 7 days if you are prone to fever blisters (herpes simplex)
  • During the healing process, 5-7 days apply ointment with a sterile q-tip only when dry. Do not over-apply ointment.
  • When scabbing occurs allow it to peel off naturally, do not pick or pull as it will influence colour retention.
  • Colour will fade up to 60% depending on skin type, within 2 weeks colour will start to resurface final results will be visible after 2 months.
  • NOTE that not all skin types heal the same, aftercare is extremely important, but pigment loss is to be expected within the healing process. A follow-up procedure allows for any colour adjustments to be made as well as shape specifications.
  • During all permanent cosmetic procedures colour will be very intense, dark, and vibrant until the healing process is complete. It is normal for areas to lose colour and fade with time. Perfection will be achieved on follow-up procedure.
  • OUTER HEALING completes in about 5-8 days for eyes and lips, 7-10 days for brows. INNER HEALING completes only within 1-2 months.
  • Final healed result is only at about 2 months. If a follow-up is needed, it is not done any sooner than 3 months after the first procedure. Do not wait longer than 6 months for follow-up procedure. This may result in a surplus charge.
  • Performing a touch-up too early may cause scarring. Some colours (especially eyebrow colours) take longer to settle in and see the final result.
  • For any questions/queries during the healing process, please feel free to contact me on my personal number provided below.
  • A consultation is included on the day of the procedure or an additional one can be made prior to the appointment for approval.
What is microblading and what is the difference between Microblading and Machine Hairstrokes?

Microblading is a technique used for eyebrows to create natural crisp hair strokes that mimic the growth of your own eyebrow hairs. Using an exceptionally fine configuration of needles, pigments are implanted into the upper dermal layer of the skin which allows for an extremely natural healed result leaving crisp fine hairs.

What makes this such a popular technique is the fact that the hairstrokes tend to heal crisp and lifelike if done by an experienced artist. However, this technique is more invasive and therefore allows for a specific skin type to present.

There are various hairstroke patterns to follow as everyone has their own unique hair pattern that should be mimicked precisely to ensure the most natural results. The hairstrokes should flow along the natural hair growth of the eyebrow.

Microblading is administered using a manual handheld tool with a fine needle that creates small incisions/cuts into the skin producing the popular lifelike eyebrow.

Much like microblading, machine hairstrokes are individually drawn hairstrokes that mimic the hair growth of a natural eyebrow except it is done with a device specifically manufactured for permanent makeup, generally the artist uses a single nano needle which ranges from 0.18- 0.35mm in diameter making the hairstrokes appear ultra-fine and lifelike.

Unlike microblading, the machine hairstrokes cause far less trauma to the skin since the pigment is implanted instead of cut into the skin. What this does is keep the integrity of the skin so that the structure of the skin stays intact during the procedure making this procedure more feasible long term.

This is however also subject to skin type and hair type as there are many various techniques and one is not necessarily more natural than the other but rather dependant on factors such as hair type and skin type.

It should also be considered that both techniques are advanced in nature and should therefore be administered by experienced master artists only.

Is microblading for everyone?

Although Microblading is not for everyone, Permanent makeup most certainly is! Microblading is just one branch on the tree of the various techniques available all leading to the same beautiful result- natural full looking eyebrows.

Since Microblading is only one technique in the collection of various techniques used in permanent makeup it is only fair to say that it will not be suitable for everybody. The technique itself is dependent on skin type as well as hair type. Lifestyle and metabolic functions also play a role in determining whether you are a candidate or not, which can be accessed during a consultation.

A consultation is included on the day of the procedure or an additional one can be made prior to the appointment for approval.

How long does microblading last?

Because microblading allows for less pigment to be implanted, meaning the pigment is only implanted into a single pocket entry, it does have the ability to fade away completely over time. The client’s health, aftercare and skin type does play a role in the longevity of the cosmetic tattoo.

Generally, within 1-3 years a colour boost is recommended. If a longer lasting eyebrow is desired, it is recommended that a different technique be used such as shading which is equally as natural and beautiful as microblading.

What is the difference between microblading/hairstrokes and shaded brows?

Shaded/pixel/ombre/shimmer brows is a technique used to create a fuller more denser looking eyebrow whilst still appearing natural. It is more saturated in pigment than microblading since the pigment is dispersed on the total superficial layer of the skin as a background effect giving it a soft powdery finish.

This technique has several categories ranging between that of a soft natural powdery look or a full, dramatic makeup look. It all depends on the desired result and is achieved through using different needle configurations giving this technique far more versatility.

Shaded eyebrows have the capacity to be suitable for most skin types as it has a far gentler approach on the skin. As a rule, shaded eyebrows can last longer with results from 2-5 years.

Because microblading is not suitable for every skin type this is an equally beautiful subtle soft technique that can bring back your confidence and still achieve the natural results given by microblading.

How long does the procedure take?

The initial procedure can take up to an hour and a half with more time spent on consulting about colour, shape, and desired overall look. 20 minutes of this time will be spent on anaesthetic to numb the area before proceeding.

To make it as comfortable as possible, during the consultation, every step and possible outcome is discussed with the client. Depending on the different procedures such as eyeliner and lips. Time will vary depending on the technique used and area of the face done.

How do you choose a shape for my face?

During our consultation I study the symmetry and proportions of your face. I then decide and draw a shape according to your exact needs and facial structure.

I measure the shape that has been drawn in to ensure balance and harmony that compliments all your facial features. After the shape has been agreed upon the procedure will commence.

Every possible outcome is considered and discussed. Attention to detail is of the utmost importance and taken into regard at every step.

Will my own hairs be shaved/waxed off?

This is a myth and no such thing will be done. I will however remove any hairs that are out of place to neaten the area. The whole idea is to leave your eyebrows as natural as possible. It is preferable to grow out your hair beforehand as this will give it a far more natural appearance.

Do I need a touch up?

Yes, the first touch up will need to be done in 8-12 weeks after your initial procedure for perfection and durability. This will ensure the longevity of the procedure. It is of the utmost importance that this follow up is completed.

Generally, after the initial touch up a colour boost will need to be done every 1-3 years depending on the skin’s retention of pigment. This may vary in time since every individual’s metabolic rate differs.

Is there any downtime?

Absolutely not! You will still be able to go to work and be seen in public, there is however aftercare instructions that will need to be followed for you to get the best healed result possible.

A darker dramatic brow will have to be expected during the healing process which takes up to 7-10 days. Expect to look as if you had your eyebrows tinted for the first week only. After the area has healed you will look back to your normal self with a bonus of perfectly shaped permanent makeup day and night!

It is however not recommended to plan major life events around this such as weddings etc. It should be done at least 4-6 weeks prior.

How will I look directly after the procedure?

The area treated will be slightly red and inflamed which will subside within a few hours. It will also appear much bolder and darker for the first 7-10days until the area has fully healed. After the healed results, the brow will be 20-40% lighter.

Is it painful?

Minor discomfort can be expected with every procedure, but a very high-quality anaesthetic is used in every procedure to help ease discomfort. The procedure itself is also very quick and allows for little to no pain during the procedure depending on the client’s own pain threshold.

Generally, the first pass will be felt but after that more anaesthetic is applied to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. During the procedure anaesthetic is continually applied to remove almost all discomfort.

Is it safe?

As I work according to strict OSHA guidelines for proper infection control every procedure is 100% safe.

I use a new unopened disposable sterilized needle for each client, and all implements, and tools are sterilized before and after each procedure.

All consumables are fully disposed of and precautions are taken according to strict bloodborne pathogen protocols.

How permanent is it?

The microblading technique is still a form of cosmetic tattooing which means it does reach the papillary dermal layer of your skin, it is however possible for it to fade away completely over time depending on skin type and overall health.

As there is far less pigment implanted into the skin as the conventional permanent makeup. However, the procedure should not be taken likely as any time a needle opened the skin and pigment is implanted it is permanent.

Touch ups/colour boosts are recommended for the longevity of the eyebrow. Eyeliners and lips are considered permanent and can last up to 5-10 years before touch up is needed.

How do you choose a colour for me?

I work according to your skins undertone and overtone to match the colour exactly. I also look at your eyebrow hairs natural hair colour and work according to that. Which is why it is important not to come with tinted eyebrows. Wait at least 4-8 weeks for the tint to wash out before coming in for the procedure.

Can I have my old permanent makeup that was done somewhere else corrected?

It can be corrected but, in most cases, will need more than one touch up. Tattoo removal is highly recommended for best results, typically removal is always done beforehand to avoid any interactions in the future. This will be charged at an additional cost according to how much work will be needed or how many sessions are needed.

It is of the Utmost importance to notify us if permanent makeup has been done previously. A High-Definition photo must be sent to us so that we may advise on whether the eyebrow can be corrected or must be removed. This will avoid any disappointment on the day.

Can pregnant/lactating women have this procedure done?

We always recommend that a doctor’s note must be brought with on the day of procedure to ensure that all safety precautions have been taken.

What if I don’t like it?

The procedure will not commence unless the client has approved the shape and colour chosen by the artist making the client fully responsible for the decision.

It is recommended that the client understands that for the first 7-10 days the treated area will be much darker and much bolder than the healed result, this is called the healing phase and is a small sacrifice of all permanent makeup and can thus not be avoided. As soon as it is healed guaranteed, it will appear much lighter and far more natural.

That is the course of healing and is inevitable for it to look natural if done by an experienced artist. If at all you do not like it, it can fade away completely over time or removal can be considered.

How long does it take to heal?

For eyebrows it generally takes between 7-10 days to heal and scab, sometimes depending on overall health 14 days. In this time aftercare instructions will need to be followed religiously.

Eyeliner takes between 5-7 days and lips between 4-6 days.

All cosmetic procedures take between 30-60 days for true colour to show which means even after the scabs have come off your skin is still going through a healing process.
